The Story Behind the Photo

Near my house there is a bridge that is being reconstructed. There is rubble everywhere and rebar sticking up out of the base of the bridge. The supporting columns of the bridge have huge bases that are adjacent to the river. They afford a great platform upon which to take great photos of a subject with a variety of great backgrounds. This was taken in June, 2009. It is from a form known as Holy Heaven. With the flowing river as the backdrop, I felt that the pose looked very dramatic.

The Story Behind the Photo

After a rainy long weekend in August, 2008, one of my friends decided to escape the campsite early on the last morning that we stayed. He’s easily one of the strongest paddlers I know, cutting through the water like one of the loons I had seen that morning on that very same lake. He finally decided to return after a little while, which prompted me to take advantage of a great image of a person in the wilderness.

The Story Behind the Photo

I visited Little Doe Lake in Algonquin Park with some friends over a long weekend in August, 2008. It rained like Noah was coming for most of the beginning of the trip. The foul weather kept a grip on us for most of the weekend, intermittently teasing us with warmth and sunshine. The last night we were there, the skies finally cleared. I was very excited to wake up in the morning, as I was hoping for a nice sunrise. This is what I saw.

The Story Behind the Photo

This is a first for this blog. A photo not taken with an analog camera. This image was captured using a Canon Powershot SD600. I wanted to give a feeling of warmth, so I experimented by using the camera with the built-in flash and instead used my Speedlite 420EX fired manually. Interestingly enough, the test image at the beginning (just the background) came out very nicely the first time. Beginner’s luck, to be sure. Acquiring this image took a few tries.

The subject is about seven weeks away from a new phase of life. Hopefully I have captured her excitement and joy.

The Story Behind the Photo

In late January 2007, my good friend and I were doing photos for a portfolio he was working on and went to an abandoned industrial complex. It was freezing cold, but it was manageable inside the building, as the winds couldn’t get at us. This photo was challenging because it involved a lot of steady work from both of us. This doesn’t seem challenging until you realize how much we were shivering.

The Story Behind the Photo

The weather was cold in late January of 2007. I took my friend to an abandoned industrial complex to shoot some photos for a martial arts portfolio he was working on. I brought my sword along, as it is a folded steel Katana that catches the sun effectively. The many holes in the roof of this one large section provided enough ambient light to capture this moment. There is no photoshopping here. It’s just a ray of sunlight reflected off of brilliant craftsmanship and a steady hand.

The Story Behind the Photo

While at a cottage at the end of October of 2006, I awoke early one morning to go out and photograph the newly fallen snow. It was quite a sight to see everything blanketed in a downy layer of white. These benches were lined up quite nicely, and it was interesting considering that they were most likely used in the summertime to gaze out over the water at the sunrise. Not so warm in October, let me tell you.

The Story Behind the Photo

I had the opportunity to take some photos of the city in the early morning from a very unique vantage point. I was sharing the space with some other photographers, and I didn’t want to have the same images they did. I decided to take advantage of the fog to create some futuristic-looking cityscapes. What do you think?

The Story Behind the Photo

After taking this photo ealier in the month, I wanted to try some more photos using just a flashlight and a very long exposure. This time I used some really slow slide film. I found the colour saturation to be much better. It’s a neat effect which I am going to employ at a later date.

The Story Behind the Photo

It was the end of our annual Interior Trip in Algonquin Park. August 2006 had brought a great experience. On the last night, while everyone was asleep, I did some experimental work. This one turned out almost exactly the way I expected it to. I will definitely try it again very soon to create a more refined image.
